What is CBT?

CBT is an evidence based short term, focussed psychotherapy for a wide range of common psychological problems including depression, anxiety, phobias etc. CBT focusses on how you think (cognitons) and behaviours in the here and now, rather that early childhoold experiences. CBT is recommended as the treatment of choise for several problems according to NICE guidelines.

What to expect from Cambridgeshire and Suffolk CBT Service CBT treatment sessions?

The first session of CBT is an assessment sessions whereby you and the therapist work together to gather as much information on you as possible, to make sure you both learn quickly the presenting problems you have and the extent of these difficulties. You and your therapist will also aim to agree on your intended goals or treatment targets and then set up an appropriate treatment plan.

CBT sessions are structured in nature i.e. you and your therapist begin by agreeing an agenda for eash session to keep you focussed on vital matters and be able to solve the problems you want resolved. A significant aspect of CBT is that treatment is complimented by self-help homework tasks to allow you to put into practice outside therapy the tools learned in session.

In CBT your progress in treatment is reviewed at regular intervals using self-reporting forms that assesses the range and intensity of your symptoms. The number of treatment sessions is depended on the presenting problem however between 8 - 12 sessions are generally recomended.

What is EMDR?

EMDR is a non-traditional form of psychotherapy that is designed to diminish negative feelings assosciated with memories of traumatic events. EMDR utilises natural processes in order to successfully treat these trauma memories using rapid eye movements (like in REM sleep), and it focuses less on the traumatic event itself but more on the disturbing emotions and symptoms that result from the event. EMDR has recently been used to effectively treat a wide range of common mental health disorders.

What to expect from EMDR treatment?

EMDR sessions start with an assessment of your problems and symptoms, but you won’t necessarily have to reveal all the details of your traumatic experiences. Instead, we will help you focus on related negative thoughts and feelings that you are still experiencing, and decide which of these beliefs are still relevant and which ones you would like to replace with positive thoughts and beliefs.

You will be taught techniques to help you deal with disturbing feelings at first and then you will be guided through a process known as desensitization. This process involves you keeping the memory of a painful or traumatic event in mind and then following the therapist’s back-and-forth finger movements with your eyes. The purpose of this technique is to help you fully process your negative feelings and begin to recognize that you no longer need to hold on to some of them. Future sessions are devoted to reinforcing and strengthening positive feelings and beliefs until you get to a point where you can bring up memories of the traumatic event without experiencing the negativity that brought you to therapy in the first place.

EMDR session lasts between 60 - 90 minutes at a time.
